Today Fairphone revealed to the world the first 5G modular smartphone or Fairphone 4 5G, the most sustainable and ethical smartphone in the world adapts to the new times.

The Fairphone 4 is IP54 certified, allowing it to be used without problems in weather conditions such as rain or snow. using an LCD screen, which has a 6.3-inch diagonal but has the traditional 60 Hz refresh rate. The processor is a more than decent Snapdragon 750G (5G) accompanied by 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of capacity that we can expand through the microSD slot.

The new smartphone has a nanoSIM slot but also eSIM support to be able to have two lines on the same phone. The pre-installed operating system is Android 11, and in Fairphone they ensure the update to Android 12 and Android 13 but they also hope to support Android 14 and Android 15 in the future.

That design is certainly not the most advanced in the world, and in fact, it is noticeably thicker than its competitors with those 10.5 mm, but Fairphone explained how to make it thinner or integrate, for example, more advanced components (such as an OLED screen ) would have compromised repairability and would have had a higher cost.

One of the clear objectives when developing their mobiles has been the sustainable use of materials, the new Fairphone 4 makes use of ‘Fairtrade certified’ gold, responsibly sourced aluminium and tungsten, and also recycled tin.

The back cover has been created with 100% recycled polycarbonates, and that effort also extends to the processes of obtaining these minerals and of the manufacture itself. There is also a clear commitment to reducing waste: it is the ” first neutral mobile in electronic waste “. This means that for every Fairphone 4 another phone or an equivalent amount of electronic waste is recycled through its recycling programs in Africa and Europe.

The objective of the Fairphone 4 (like that of its predecessors) is that this sustainability and repairability also translate into a longer life cycle of these mobiles.

Specs

The set of cameras, as we said, is made up of two 48-megapixel sensors, one main with f / 1.6 aperture and the other ultra-wide angle with f / 2.2 aperture. Image stabilization also allows you to record videos without sudden movements affecting the result. The 25 MP front camera and f / 2.2 aperture complete that photographic set.

A compromised decision has probably been the elimination of the audio jack. They have justified it by the inclusion of the antennas or a larger battery, but they say that this intention to make this mobile last many years has mainly influenced it and they believe that in the future the focus will be on wireless headphones.

The Fairphone 4 5G can be pre-ordered from today (30th September) on the company’s official website, to then be sold at a suggested price of £499/579 euros for the 6GB/128 GB configuration (available only in Grey colour) or £569/649 euros for the 8 GB/256 GB, available in Grey, Green and Green Speckled colours, the latter available only from the Fairphone website. Availability starts October 25 in Europe.
