Xiaomi and Leica Camera AG have jointly unveiled the creation of the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, marking a significant stride forward in the smartphone industry. This institute centred on optical technology, is set to amalgamate various interdisciplinary fields such as digital imaging and AI technologies.

The Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, building upon its foundational framework, has embarked on a collaborative journey to pioneer an unprecedented industry benchmark for optical performance in mobile devices. This endeavour underscores a strong commitment to philosophy, technology, and user experience. Leading the charge is the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, poised to be the inaugural manifestation of this standard, promising unmatched optical prowess in mobile imaging. Its release is slated for this month.

Continuously propelling deep innovation in mobile imaging optical technology is the prime objective of the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute. Leveraging the combined strengths of Leica and Xiaomi, the institute is focused on four pivotal technical facets: designing ultra-precise optical lenses in compact forms, achieving optimal performance in computational photography, upholding stringent optical standards, and advancing cutting-edge optoelectronic technology research and application.

To realize this vision, Xiaomi and Leica have invested substantially and brought together a joint team of over 200 experts. Notable among them is Peter Karbe, the esteemed optical designer behind Leica’s fourth-generation lenses, who will serve as an Optical Expert. Heading the institute is Zeng Xuezong, Senior Vice President of Xiaomi Group and President of the Xiaomi Mobile Phone Department, with Yi Yan and Wang Xuanran as Deputy Directors.

Xiaomi provides robust R&D support for the Institute, with plans for three major laboratories in Beijing dedicated to Camera Hardware, Imaging, and Objective and Subjective Image Quality Evaluation. These state-of-the-art facilities, covering a total area of 2644m², are set to be among the finest and most extensive camera laboratories worldwide.

William Lu, Partner and President of Xiaomi Group, emphasized the shared commitment to excellence, stating, “Through the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, we will further leverage the respective strengths of both parties, continuously extend the boundaries of mobile imaging optical capabilities, and consistently lead the way in the mobile imaging era.”

Matthias Harsch, CEO of Leica Camera AG, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the successful integration of Leica’s legendary photography experience into mobile imaging. He expressed confidence in the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute’s ability to pioneer a new era in mobile imaging optics, pushing boundaries and forging advanced systems tailored to the contemporary era.
