Introducing the Kompanio 838 and Pentonic 800 SoCs

MediaTek will debut two new high-performance chipsets at this year’s show, each designed to deliver cutting-edge AI capabilities across multiple verticals:

Kompanio 838 SoC: Enhancing Productivity and Creativity in Chromebooks

The Kompanio 838 SoC is engineered to elevate the performance and efficiency of premium Chromebooks. It has an octa-core architecture and promises robust multitasking and all-day battery life in a thin and light form factor. Key specifications include support for DDR4 and LPDDR4X, doubling memory bandwidth from previous generations for enhanced data throughput.

This chipset integrates the MediaTek NPU 650, a dedicated AI processor that enhances interactive and high-quality multimedia experiences with exceptional power efficiency. The next-generation MediaTek Imagiq 7 series ISP delivers professional-grade HDR imaging, dual camera support, and superior low-light capture, significantly improving photo and video quality.

The Kompanio 838 supports hardware-accelerated AV1 video decoding for seamless streaming and superior picture quality, enabling 4K content streaming across up to two displays. It also incorporates MediaTek Filogic Wi-Fi 6 and 6E technology for dual-band and tri-band connectivity with speeds up to 1.9Gbps, alongside enhanced security with WPA3 support.

Industry Endorsements

“The finely tuned balance of power and efficiency the Kompanio 838 brings to Chromebook is a key point of innovation in our portfolio as we seek to bring powerful, affordable, and accessible computing to more users around the globe,” said John Solomon, VP and GM, ChromeOS and Google for Education.

Lenovo’s Benny Zhang, Executive Director and General Manager of Chromebooks in the Global Innovation Center, added, “The need for energy-efficient devices capable of multitasking continues to grow. We are committed to empowering students and teachers with tech devices and solutions that enhance learning in the classroom and beyond. Lenovo and MediaTek’s longstanding partnership is focused on delivering performance and value, and we look forward to integrating the Kompanio series chips into our upcoming Lenovo Chromebooks.”

Pentonic 800 SoC: Advancing AI-Driven Display Technologies

The Pentonic 800 SoC sets a new standard for 4K displays, including smart TVs, monitors, commercial displays, and embedded large displays. MediaTek’s latest AI processor delivers 50% faster AI processing and reduces bandwidth usage by up to 60%. Its powerful NPU supports AI-powered display technologies, such as AI-Super Resolution 3.0, AI-Contrast 2.0, and AI-Picture Quality Scene Recognition 2.0+, enhancing upscaling, picture quality, and noise reduction.

The Pentonic 800 also supports variable refresh rates (VRR) up to 4K2K 165Hz for an optimized gaming experience. Its hardware video decoding engine is compatible with key codecs like HEVC, AV1, AVS3 High Profile, and VVC (H.266), ensuring high-quality 4K video playback. OEMs can integrate MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi solutions for reliable, high-speed, low latency, and seamless peripheral connectivity via MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo solutions.

MediaTek’s Vision for the Future

During COMPUTEX, MediaTek will exhibit at a private booth how the company integrates intelligence across various domains, from Chromebooks to IoT devices, smartphones, smart TVs, routers, tablets, vehicles, and beyond.

“As we highlight our expanding leadership in AI, automotive, IoT, TVs, Chromebooks, and wireless connectivity, COMPUTEX 2024 is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate our advancements in these critical technology segments,” said Joe Chen, President and COO of MediaTek. “Our latest chipsets exemplify our commitment to upgrading user experiences and driving growth in these areas.”
