Homey, the universal smart home platform, has announced the launch of Homey Self-Hosted Server, a new software-only offering that brings the full Homey Pro operating system to users’ own hardware. Aimed squarely at power users and smart home enthusiasts, the new solution delivers Homey’s local-first, privacy-focused experience without requiring the purchase of dedicated Homey hardware.
“With Homey Self-Hosted Server, we’re opening up the Homey platform to a new group of users who want full control over where and how their smart home runs,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO of Athom, the company behind Homey. “It delivers the same powerful, user-friendly, and local-first experience people expect from Homey Pro, but on hardware of their own choosing.”

Expanding the Homey Ecosystem
Athom’s mission has long been to make smart homes easy and enjoyable for everyone. Until now, the Homey lineup has consisted of Homey Cloud for app-only control, Homey Pro mini as a more affordable entry point, and Homey Pro as its flagship all-in-one smart home hub.
With the introduction of Homey Self-Hosted Server, Athom is extending its platform to users who prioritise maximum flexibility, customisation, and control. It’s a clear nod to the growing community of users already running home automation platforms on their own servers and NAS devices.
Runs on Your Hardware
As the name suggests, Homey Self-Hosted Server runs entirely on user-owned hardware. It supports a wide range of environments, including Raspberry Pi, Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, Synology, QNAP, Proxmox, and TrueNAS. In practice, it can run on almost any system capable of running Linux.
Out of the box, the platform supports LAN, cloud, and Matter devices with no additional hardware required. Thread devices are also supported when a Thread Border Router is present on the local network. Local network integrations include Modbus-TCP, KNX-IP, and a broad selection of local LAN APIs.
Extending Wireless Connectivity with Homey Bridge
For users who want to connect Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth LE, 433 MHz, or infrared devices, Homey Self-Hosted Server can be paired with the Homey Bridge. Multiple Homey Bridges can be added and configured in Satellite Mode, extending wireless coverage throughout larger homes or multi-storey properties.
Homey Bridge is sold separately and priced at €69.

The Full Homey Pro Experience
Despite being software-only, Homey Self-Hosted Server offers the same feature set as Homey Pro. Users can control more than 50,000 devices across 1,000+ brands, create automations using Homey Flow and Advanced Flow, and monitor consumption through Homey Energy.
Additional features include Homey Insights for long-term data tracking, customisable Homey Dashboards, and access to both official and community-created apps via the Homey App Store.
