Comments from Ben Wood, Chief Analyst, CCS Insight
“These new devices provide a logical update to TCL’s core smartphone portfolio with similar characteristics to earlier models such as great screens, good cameras and a punchy price. However, TCL certainly doesn’t have the affordable segment to itself given the relentless competition from a variety of Chinese rivals both on price, and also supply, in the context of the current component shortages.”
“TCL is the concept-king when it comes to foldables and rollables. Having previously showcased a dazzling array of prototypes using its flexible display technology, it has now added the new Fold ‘n Roll device which cleverly combines folding and roll-up screen in a device that offers three different use cases. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll see this mash-up of screen technology available for sale anytime soon, and when it does eventually arrive it will doubtless have an eye-watering price tag.”
“Once again TCL teased its customers with the promise that its first foldable device will arrive by the end of the year. Given the growing number of phone makers adding this form factor to their line-ups, it seems likely that a key differentiator for TCL will be the price of its first foray into this segment. TCL’s in-house expertise in screen technology will be key to breaking through the $1000 barrier when its debut product eventually arrives, in line with the brand’s positioning of offering smartphones with great specs at a very competitive price.”
The price of the TCL 20 Pro 5G smartphone starts at £499/549 Euros, with 15w wireless charging and an 18w quick charge 3.0.
Also, TCL announced that the TCL 20L has a 6.67-inch IPS display with A FHD resolution. Under the lid of the device are a Snapdragon 662 chipset, 4GB of RAM, file storage of 64 GB (there is support for microSD cards) and a battery capacity of 5000 mAh.
On the rear panel is placed a quadcopter with the main sensor at 48 MP, ultra-wide by 8 MP, a macro for 2 MP and a depth sensor also on 2 MP. The selfie camera will allow you to take pictures with a resolution of 16 MP. Other features include a 3.5mm audio link, an NFC module, IP52 case protection, and a pre-installed version of Android 11 and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
The price of the TCL 20L smartphone will be £199/229 Euros, what do you think of the devices announced today at the online launch event from TCL will you be picking one up.
