Comments from Ben Wood, Chief Analyst, CCS Insight

“These new devices provide a logical update to TCL’s core smartphone portfolio with similar characteristics to earlier models such as great screens, good cameras and a punchy price. However, TCL certainly doesn’t have the affordable segment to itself given the relentless competition from a variety of Chinese rivals both on price, and also supply, in the context of the current component shortages.”

“TCL is the concept-king when it comes to foldables and rollables. Having previously showcased a dazzling array of prototypes using its flexible display technology, it has now added the new Fold ‘n Roll device which cleverly combines folding and roll-up screen in a device that offers three different use cases. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll see this mash-up of screen technology available for sale anytime soon, and when it does eventually arrive it will doubtless have an eye-watering price tag.”

“Once again TCL teased its customers with the promise that its first foldable device will arrive by the end of the year. Given the growing number of phone makers adding this form factor to their line-ups, it seems likely that a key differentiator for TCL will be the price of its first foray into this segment. TCL’s in-house expertise in screen technology will be key to breaking through the $1000 barrier when its debut product eventually arrives, in line with the brand’s positioning of offering smartphones with great specs at a very competitive price.”
