The Huawei nova 5T has no fewer than four cameras at the rear, that should work. Huawei also has the specifications perfectly in order with a large battery and its own Kirin 980 chipset.
The white box of the nova 5T immediately reveals the appearance of the smartphone. In the packaging of the Huawei nova 5T, we also find a USB Type-C cable is also supplied with a SuperCharge adapter. Furthermore, we also find an adapter plug for USB-C to 3.5 mm for a traditional headset or headset.
The Huawei nova 5T is a sleekly designed smartphone with, in our case, a glossy black finish. The smartphone is certainly not heavy and can be operated with one hand. On the front, it is striking that the lens of the front camera seems a bit larger than other smartphones with a notch/punch hole. However, there is not much to criticize about the appearance of the phone itself.
It is striking that the on and off button is more sunk in the side of the device. The button is also made a little larger so that it is easy to press with your thumb. Handy, because it also serves as a fingerprint scanner. The scanner works fast and adds an extra layer of security to the Huawei nova 5T. Above that are the volume buttons that control the volume on your device.
On the front, we see the 6.26-inch display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and the punch hole that we discussed earlier. The back is very fingerprint sensitive. Here we find Honor’s quad-camera setup. Yes, you did read that right, this phone contains four lenses that together form the main camera.
The bottom is where we find the USB Type-C connection as well as the speaker. Huawei has released the nova 5T in three colours, Crush Blue and Midsummer Purple and Black, priced at £399 from Amazon, Huawei and Vodafone and Carphone Warehouse
You can choose a different look for your phone with the Theme app. Huawei EMUI also has the option of not all displaying the apps on the home screen but in a drawer. On the home screen, you can easily merge apps into a folder of specific apps.
This way you keep the home screen organized. Of course, you can also place widgets, on the left-most screen you will find Google Discover with recommended news items for you.
The nova 5T is, of course, meant to use the phone, something I didn’t encounter any problems with during testing period for this review. The dialer lets you navigate through your contacts and lets you create further favourites. Missed the call? No problem, these contacts are shown in red in the call list. The nova 5T has support for old 2G networks and the 3G and 4G network.
The Internet has also proved to be no problem for the nova 5T where the device has support for both 2.4 GHz WiFi and 5 GHz networks. The Chrome browser is pre-installed on the device, just like Huawei’s own browser. Other connectivity can be found in the form of NFC and Bluetooth. The device also supports the most common positioning systems (GPS).
Multimedia: music and media
You do not have to rely on a 3.5-millimetre connection for your headphones, it has been replaced by a USB Type-C connection. Fortunately, Huawei does supply a short cable with the device, so that you can still use your old headphones or headset. The device also works without problems with a wireless headset via Bluetooth.
The screen is large enough to pleasantly watch a movie and the display of the colours is good. The phone is also great for playing a game, for example, the installation app for Fortnite has already been placed on the device. However, the nova 5T has no stereo speakers. Good to know is that the screen can also be read well in the sun. However, the screen protector seems a bit more sensitive to damage.
Camera: photos and videos
The nova 5T has four lenses at the rear, including a 2-megapixel macro lens. With this lens, you can photograph objects from very close range without loss of quality. Ideally, your object is at a distance of 4 centimetres for the best macro photo with the nova 5T. During testing, this provides a nice new dimension to photos.
Furthermore, the camera setup consists of a 48-megapixel main camera with f / 1.8 light sensitivity, a 16-megapixel super-wide-angle lens (117 degrees) with f / 2.2 light sensitivity and a 2-megapixel depth camera.
There are more than enough settings and options in the camera app from Huawei. For example, we find a portrait mode, night mode and AR lens. Tapping on the more option also gives you other options such as a time-lapse, super macro, panorama or slow motion.
Your selfies will almost never fail with the 32-megapixel front camera. This camera has a light sensitivity of f/2.0 which should also yield a usable photo in some dark situations. The quality of the selfie photos is good and detailed.
Performance: battery, speed and memory
The performance of the nova 5T is neat, we experience no problems with navigating between apps and using them. Games like Asphalt 9 also run smoothly on the nova 5T, also Call of Duty mobile game and Fortnite and PUBG had no issues.
Huawei has used the Kirin 980 chipset in her device, you will also find 6 gigabytes of memory in the device that’s more than sufficient for apps and games.
128 GB of storage space completes the device. But we still find the required mandatory apps on the device again. A shame because with other brands we sometimes see the option to check apps off and on during the first setup. You can remove the apps, but we prefer to see it the other way around.
In terms of battery, we still find a reasonable capacity in the device with approximately 3750 mAh. In practice, we do about a day and a half with the nova 5T before we have to reach for the fast charger. As a screen time, we note a neat 4.5 hours over the day and a half.
The nova 5T has proved to be a great device in practice without any real protrusions. It is nice that Huawei has added a macro lens, but in practice, you will probably not use it often. In terms of specifications, you get an excellent smartphone with a little unnecessary bloatware.
But you also must know that this smartphone the Huawei nova 5T is just a renamed Honor 20
