Athom has rolled out a major update to Homey Energy, introducing solar forecasting and dynamic export pricing. The update shifts home energy management from reactive monitoring to proactive automation, letting smart homes schedule power-hungry appliances around predicted sunlight and real-time grid feed-in rates.

Solar Forecasting

The new forecast plots projected solar generation for today and tomorrow directly on the Homey solar chart as a dashed overlay alongside live production. The projection algorithm models local weather forecasts, system specifications, and historical generation patterns—improving its accuracy over time as it logs more household data.

  • Flow Integration: Dedicated Flow cards display today’s and tomorrow’s expected total output (kWh), estimated peak power (W), and peak generation windows.

  • Smart Scheduling: Users can trigger automations to run heat pumps, EV chargers, dishwashers, or home batteries specifically during peak production hours to maximise self-consumption.

  • Custom Array Configuration: While Homey defaults to standard south-facing angles, users can configure precise azimuth, tilt, peak capacity, and split arrays across multi-directional roofs.

Export Pricing

Export pricing tracks the exact financial yield—or cost—of feeding surplus solar energy back into the electrical grid.

  • Fixed & Time-of-Use Rates: Supports flat contract rates as well as average calculations for peak and off-peak export tariffs.

  • Dynamic Tariffs: For market-linked contracts with fluctuating hourly pricing, Homey dynamically adjusts feed-in calculations using spot market rates combined with user-defined price offsets.

“Solar panels are most useful when you know when the sun will be strongest,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO at Athom. “With a forecast and clear export numbers, people can plan around their own production instead of guessing at it.”

Platform Availability

The update is live across the following platforms and software versions:

  • Hardware Support: Homey Pro (2023–2026), Homey Pro mini, Homey Self-Hosted Server, and Homey Cloud (requires Homey Premium).

  • Requirements: Homey OS v13.4.0+, Homey Mobile App v10.1.0+, and at least one connected solar inverter or energy meter device.
