Smart home creator Athom has introduced universal Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices directly through the Homey ecosystem.

Previously, updating smart hardware required proprietary bridges, vendor apps, or cumbersome manual flashing. With this update, users can manage, install, and track all device updates directly from the Homey Mobile App or Homey Web App without third-party tools.

How Device Updates Work

  • Zigbee & Z-Wave Devices: Updates are distributed directly through individual brand apps in the Homey App Store. Early supporting manufacturers include IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Inovelli, Zooz, Niko, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng, and Nous, with more onboarding soon.

  • Matter Devices: Manufacturers don’t need to update apps. Homey automatically queries and retrieves verified firmware packages from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) Distributed Compliance Ledger.

  • End-to-End Automation: Homey manages download verification, background installation, real-time progress indicators, and completion alerts.

Why It Matters

Smart home manufacturers release regular firmware patches to resolve security vulnerabilities, patch bugs, and boost device stability. Consolidating updates into a single interface removes friction, ensuring smart setups stay secure and operational without extra maintenance steps.

“Device firmware rarely gets updated because the process is cumbersome. By handling device updates inside Homey, we make it practical for both users and developers. That makes the whole smart home more dependable.”

Stefan Witkamp, CEO at Athom
